The 7 Habits of Successful Artists

An interesting presentation given by Andrew Price called: “The 7 habits of highly effective artists”. The subject, inspired by the popular book of Steven Covey: “The 7 habits of highly effective people”, shows how developing some simple habits going from “Daily work” to “Steal” can help. It is worth seeing.

One of the top things he suggested was to accomplish one thing every day, however small. The structure of the Virtual Art Academy program fits this perfectly because we break down the whole complex process of learning painting into about 200 easily mastered key skills that you work on one-by-one. Get started today on building those skills. As Andrew says in this video, you have to get started to make progress.

Here are the 7 secrets if you don’t have time to see the video.

  1. Daily work
  2. Volume, not perfection
  3. Steal (well)
  4. Conscious learning
  5. Rest
  6. Feedback
  7. Create what you love

Of these the Virtual Art Academy Apprentice Program will help you with 1: Daily work, using the assignments we set you, 2. Volume via our assignment repetition suggestions, 3. Steal, through our monthly study of master artists, both old master and contemporary 4. Conscious learning , using our learning objectives for each assignment, and 6. Feedback, via our Online Campus and supportive community!

As for number 5, rest, well we’ll leave that up to you!

  • thank you so much. For months I was stalled. I picked up some great books from the local library after reading this article my eyes were opened to the message from the painters – that they had many books in their library from many different artists. I always wondered why. They said they drew inspiration and technique from the other artists they admired. Now I know what they meant – they steal. Great article. Thank you again. I am believing in myself again thanks to you
