I painted this scene as the sun was setting over the Appenine Mountains in Lunigiana, Italy. It was a spectacular winter evening with the mountains turning a dramatic bright orange just before the sun set.
I used a variety of techniques here. I started with several washes, thinned with turpentine, using the same approach as a watercolor painting. Then I added various impasto areas but leaving quite a bit of the washed areas showing. I also used a palette knife to scrape off various areas and suggest distance. The temperature of this painting is predominantly cool, with some gradual transitions of temperature moving into the distance.
