Yoshida Hiroshi (1876 – 1950) was a 20th-century Japanese painter and woodblock print maker. He is regarded as one of the greatest artists of the shin-hanga style, and was especially known for his landscape prints. Yoshida travelled widely, and was particularly known for his images of non-Japanese subjects done in traditional Japanese woodblock style, including the Taj Mahal, the Swiss Alps, the Grand Canyon, and other National Parks in the USA.
His work is worth looking at closely because of the beautiful compositions. In particular note the use of interesting space division and flattening values. Hiroshi is a master at finding beautiful shapes in nature and simplifying them. Note also how he finds the itness in natural objects such as trees and mountains. His paintings often have great unity, and you will often see the principle of contrast of temperature and dominant temperature at work.
