Description
This hinged wooden pochade box has a carry handle, a palette, two brass latches and a pair of wing nut clips that hold a canvas panel in the lid.
The lid is the panel carrier and easel, and the base has a palette that slides out with storage underneath storing small paint tubes, brushes, and palette knives. The lid closes with two latches with a sturdy leather carrying handle fixed to the base. It has a standard 1/4″ camera tripod bush underneath, fixed inside a fairly large additional layer of reinforcing wood glued to the base.
You open the lid to until it’s in a horizontal position, then you raise easel from within the lid to the desired angle using the struts. Once it is in position you can keep it in place using the brass nuts.
The panel carrier has two slots, both 6mm wide. It can hold two thin painting supports back-to-back, or one thicker painting support per slot. If you use metric sized painting supports it fits 24cm x 30cm panels, but imperial sized 12×10″ panels may be slightly too large.
The easel has two little metal clamps that run in the slots which you hold in place using wing nuts screwed onto short coach bolts. The clamps hold the painting support sides in place, however there is no support for the bottom edge of the canvas. You can insert the painting support in either landscape or portrait mode. The two small clamps hold the panel in place so that almost all of the panel edge is accessible for painting.
Construction
The Mabef box is made in Italy and is constructed of linseed oiled, stain-resistant beech wood.

And it even makes a fair walking stick that helps me go down rocky slopes. And mine has lasted… Read more “Mabef pochade box review”
