I have used the large coulter set up for about 5 years. Yes, the large mixing palette size is great (12×16)… and if I pre-load it with paint before I head out, the set up speed is good. This gear will remain as my main-stay for local area outings. I do regret not buying the mid-sized box though. The large model is a bit of a wrestling match to get it into its recommended back pack and its size makes it too big to fly by air, IMO.
I did not buy the panel holder with the extended width (not shown on Barry’s images). I bought the panel holder shown on this review website. I found this regular mast/panel holder to be problematic: either the hardware came loose in travel or I could never get it tight enough to hold the panel without retightening whilst painting. I solved these problems by buying another companies panel holder for $20 used. I still use the oak vertical mast that I originally bought, but the rest, hardware and panel grasping pieces, are from the other used unit.
As I am planning a long painting trip by air, I am debating over what gear to buy… another, albeit smaller, coulter paint box?
